Dr Kelly Herweg joined the Craig View Team in August 2019 as a locum veterinarian and stayed on full time – adding not only to our diverse set of skills, she brought along her radiant smile, soft nature and determination.
She had a passion for animals and biology as a young teenager and knew from then that studying veterinary science would be the ideal way of getting the best of both. Having graduated in 2016 she has worked in Vanderbijlpark (her hometown) and now at Craig View Veterinary Clinic.
At this stage, Dr Kelly does not have a favourite surgery to perform, but her most memorable surgery was the completion of her first enterectomy on a patient who would have otherwise lost his life. Having to remove a piece of the intestine and attach it back together can be a high-risk surgery, but the patient had a healthy recovery. The surgery was a success and this case for her was unforgettable.
Dr Kelly’s partner is encouraging of her career and understands that personal sacrifices are far greater than one initially realises. The long hours and amount of skills needed (both physically and mentally) are challenging and being in a relationship with a vet, he said, “I have a newfound respect for Veterinarians since experiencing their day to day routine.”
Dr Kelly wants to remind all pet owners that, “You are everything to your pet -give them the unconditional love they give you!”
