Signs of Dental Disease in Dogs and Cats.

The first thing you can do at home is to simply look for signs of dental disease. Lift your pet's lip, and ask the following questions:

  1. Does your dog have bad breath, (Halitosis)?
  2. Loose or missing teeth?
  3. Redness, bleeding or swollen gums?
  4. Excessive build up of plaques, tartar and discoloration of teeth?
  5. Does you pet have problems eating?
  6. Excessive drooling.
  7. Is your pet head shy?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, your pet could have periodontal disease.

Preventing Dental Disease.

Periodontal disease can be prevented, treated and even reversed if caught early.

Prevention of periodontal disease can be reduce by doing the following:

  • Brush your dog’s teeth 3 to 4 times a week to help reduce plaque,Be sure to use toothpaste that is formulated for dogs.
  • Visit your local veterinary hospital team for regular professional dental cleanings. This will reduce bacteria and help guard against periodontitis.
  • Give your dog chew toys and perhaps consider dog food specially formulated to address dental disease.
  • You can also provide your pet with chew treats treated with enzymes that help reduce the formation of tartar and calculus. The chews do not take the place of brushing but is a great supplement and a treat for your pet.
